Housing Law Handbook
A Practical Guide

Stephen Cottle, with Liz Davies, Adrian Berry, John Beckley, Desmond Rutledge, Marina Sergides and Adrian Marshall Williams

Overview

Housing law issues can be wide-ranging and involve dealing with several areas of the law. Housing Law Handbook provides a practical and concise outline of the law and procedure relating to housing problems. The book aims to be a first port of call for lawyers and advisors dealing with housing as well as professionals in the social housing sector, providing information in a concise and manageable form to support busy litigators and caseworkers. The book will also be indispensable for those involved in housing management. The Housing Law Handbook:

  • covers possession proceedings from start to finish, including mortgage repossessions as well as an overview of housing benefit and rent arrears
  • provides a detailed account of homelessness rights, duties and powers and an explanation of the rules governing the allocation of social housing
  • covers new ground in addressing housing where the provision of accommodation by a local housing authority is restricted by immigration status but permitted by a public authority on other grounds
  • explains other routes into housing under the National Health Service Act 2006, Mental Health Act 1983 and Children Act 1989.

In addition, there is an overview of the numerous enforcement measures available to tackle anti-social behaviour, information on dealing with hazardous housing conditions under the Housing Act 2004 and remedies for disrepair.
